SCS Responds to Australasia’s Growing Appetite for Sustainable Seafood SCS Global Services Sustainable Seafood Expert Now Based in Perth
Dr. Sabine Daume, who has led SCS Global Services’ third-party certification services under the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) programs for the past several years, is now based in Perth, Western Australia, enhancing the company’s ability to service the Australasian market. SCS’ expansion follows growing demand for sustainable seafood in the region; in 2012, the government of Western Australia allocated $14.5 million for regional fisheries to undergo MSC certification audits. SCS is one of a select group of certification bodies approved by Western Australia to conduct these assessments.
“Dr. Daume’s relocation to Perth is a key element in our enhanced auditing capability in the region, positioning ourselves to more effectively support Western Australia’s cutting-edge seafood sustainability initiative,” said Dr. Robert J. Hrubes, Executive Vice President at SCS.
An internationally recognized authority on abalone and other invertebrate fisheries as well as aquaculture, Dr. Daume has longstanding expertise in the region. She earned her PhD in Australia, followed by more than ten years of fisheries and aquaculture research in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. She led reassessment efforts for the world’s first MSC certification, the Western Australian Rock Lobster, and has managed assessments of five certified Australian fisheries in her role at SCS, representing the largest market share of certified fisheries in Australia.
Dr. Daume and SCS are connected to a global network of recognized marine science experts, and can tailor assessment teams to meet the needs of fisheries and other businesses in the seafood supply chain throughout the Asia Pacific region.
Dr. Daume will be joining Mr. Nick Capobianco, SCS’ Australian Regional Representative, and primary regional contact for all other certification services offered by SCS Global Services.
